Kinda personal question, here, but has anyone here ever been homeless? The reason I ask is because on my way out of the grocery store today I notice a girl not too much younger than I am with a sign reading that she's broke, traveling, and hungry with absolutely no money to her name. Not to sound like an asshole, but I generally don't give money to the homeless (mostly because I'm unemployed myself and living off of unemployment and financial aid, right now), but this girl could've easily been someone I've known at some point in my life, like a similar couple I saw on my way back from Target this one day. So as I pull out of the parking lot, I give her a couple bucks and I'm on my way.
Now, yes, I realize that it's entirely likely this girl chose to travel cross country with whatever meager cash she had in her wallet as some people are wont to do, but still. The world can be a dangerous and cruel place and even if the money I gave her ends up just going to weed or a bottle of Jack, I hope she makes it to wherever she's going to okay.

not only do they exist, but they are RAMPANT in fucking college towns.
and yes, that girl is traveling across country, probably to an anarchist non-gathering. and yes, you're probably a terrible person for only giving to a person who looks like somebody you could know.
but we all just do what we can. i know that you're supposed to give money to shelters and such instead of giving change to people on the street, but i still give when i can. i don't particularly care what they spend it on (after all, if you're an addict drugs are as important to you as food...) i just think that after years or decades of seeing human beings asking for money and not giving anything, even when you have change just sitting in your pocket, your heart hardens to the point where you're not much use to anybody anymore. so, to make a long story short, good for you. kindness is way underrated.
