Geeeeeez it's been a long time. I had kind of given up on SG. It had run its course for me, but someone keeps anonymously renewing my subscription; and now here I am. (I suspect it's actually SG just trying to get me back. Awww.)
So...last I wrote I was working on a book, running and running and running, and probably talking about an ice storm I survived. That was Winter 2009. Since then, a few things have changed. A few have not. First, I finished my book. It's done done and will be out in January of 2011. I'm already on Amazon.com in the US, Canada, Germany, and even Japan. Fuck yeah. There is even talk about a book signing in San Diego in January during this big ass conference. That's kind of exciting. There were a few hiccups along the way, as should be anticipated, but it all worked out in the end. The publisher even adopted my cover-art design. I refused to let them use the one their freelancer created. Nuh. Uh. Of course, I don't get paid for the design, but I should get art credit. Should.
The crap news: as soon as I finished my book. my job ended. Hey thanks for the scholarship now bugger off. To be fair, I knew it was coming. I was on a three-year contract and my contract ended in June of this year. So concludes my career as a librarian. I'm now looking to get into something a little different; a little faster; a little more dynamic; and a lot more diverse in terms of my coworkers. Did you know 85% of librarians are White women over the age of 55? There is nothing wrong with that in itself, but for a younger, ambitious, man of color, it's a problem. I love my mother and my grandmother, but I don't want to work with them 40 hours a week.
I've started working with a local technology training group. It's a small op and they do a few things. They help start-ups start up. They do all the web work for the start-up and help them create a vision and mission statement along with a strategic plan. That's where I come in. I do the writing. I'm also doing some of the training. I lead WordPress workshops for newbies and teach basic MS Office courses for older generations of office assistants who need to be dragged kicking and screaming into this century. We're also working on holding a workshop on internet safety for teens at the local public library. Guess who's in charge of that one.
So that's about it for now.
Oh, and I found this via Aisline's facebook profile. It's a set of pics reenacting a scene from Fight Club, but with all SGs as the fighters. Sweet.
