12:24 PM. Monday. First day back at work. It is quiet. Very quiet. I'm quite sure no one wants to be here. They are either openly engaging in conversation that has nothing to do with work or with their holiday, or they are hiding in their office avoiding engaging in conversation that has nothing to do with work or their holiday. I opted for the latter which isn't any safer I've come to learn. If someone visits you, you have no place to run. You're in your own office. Where are you going to go? I suppose I could fake a meeting but I last time I tried that it totally backfired. I pretended to answer the phone as though I just got a phone call. It actually rang during fake conversation. Yeah that didn't go over so well. Reminds me of an old friend. She met a guy at a bar, took him home for the night. The next day, he wouldn't leave. He just wanted to hang out and watch TV, eat some food, maybe go again. Instead of just telling him to hit the bricks, she made up some excuse...had to be somewhere blah blah...she actually got in her car and drove around the block just to get rid of the guy. That's just funny to me.
Back to me. I now have only 6 unread emails (down from 96) and I've reduced my feed reader from over 400 to under 200. That's a decent morning's worth of work. And I learned that I have over two weeks of vacation time left, even though I've been off since December 18th. Fucking rad. You know what else is pretty rad? Tasty treats delivered to your desk. Graze.com allows you to select from a variety of snack collections (from the fruit and nut variety to the deli and bakery variety) and indicate how often you'd like to receive your box. All the foods are hand-picked and free of colorings, flavorings, and preservatives. Snack-based subscriptions. Brilliant. The downside? It's only available in the UK right now. Pisser.
Speaking of pissers, this is something else I found: socially conscious, travel packs of premium toilet seat covers. Seriously. Toletta makes a thicker, larger toilet seat cover that is still fully biodegradable and safe for septic systems. They are also packaged in a handy travel-sized case that can fit in your purse. They come in two different colors (pink or blue), and a percentage of the proceeds go to an associated cause: breast cancer research for pink and child poverty awareness for blue. I think that's just awesome.
Granny Boots. This one's for me. It's a series of dance parties for the 9-5 working stiff. Parties are every Wednesday from 7:30-10; early enough so you can go home, get some shut eye, and be ready for work the next day. These are in Canada (Toronto, I think), but other similar events have been spotted elsewhere around the world. What's to stop someone from organizing something locally? Hmmmm...I see possibilities...This reminds me. Mix Master Mike is coming back to town. I'll be in Denver. Damn. Double damn damn.
In more sober news, Howard Zinn will be speaking at Sundance: Thursday, January 22nd, 1 PM. The event will feature readings by Benjamin Bratt, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, QOrianka Kilcher, and Marisa Tomei, and includes some musical performances. I also found a cool video of him from the Authors@Google project. It's good, but it's about an hour long:
Time for lunch. Till next time...
