Good Vibrations
Why is it that you can drive a car at 16 but you can't legally buy a vibrator until you're 18 in most States (21 in a few even less progressive ones)?
Whether you are a sex-aholic or a Clit-Totaling Abstinence promoter we should all be able to agree that a healthy exploration of female sexuality is a good thing. I know that abstinence folk believe that since you should save the sex for marriage and might argue that playing with sex toys might create a slippery slope, but honestly passing out the vibrators seems like one of the healthiest medians.
I come from a set of abstinence promoting parents and I never understood how it could possibly make sense that adolecant girls and women in general are all hush-hush with one another about their sexuality and their bodies and then suddenly when you get married you are supposed to blow your new hubby's sexual fantasies out of the water with your wicked sex skills. Gosh, meek-modest-virgin one day, sex-goddess an hour after the ceremony.
I doubt I'm the only one who didn't make the leap from entirely horrified of my own body and completely ignorant of how "things" worked to sex goddess overnight. ("Sex goddess"-dom is a state of mind and I'm there even though I hope I look back in 10 years an think "I really had no idea exactly how amazing this sex stuff was.")
I think that we do ourselves, each other and our society a huge disservice by hording the sex toys and discouraging open communication among women about our bodies, our "lady-bits" and the big O and how to get there. And chit-chat among 13-year olds doesn't cut it. I remember discussing at length with my other 13-year old girl-friends how odd it was that everyone was so bent out of shape about "oral sex" - I mean, really, how sinful could it possibly be to talk about sex?
I'm not making that up.
Granted, most 13-year olds (especially now) are a lot more sexually aware than I was at 13 years old. But where are they learning that stuff? Learning it is good, but perhaps we are leaving them to learn it from the wrong places and through more dangerous situations. There just seems like there could be better ways to help them start to tap into the knowledge.
Which brings me to vibrators. The lowest legal age in any state to buy a vibrator is 18-years old. There is something very wrong about that when you can get your drivers' license at 16. I'm sure someone somewhere has been killed by a vibrator but I bet the numbers are a lot lower than with cars. We think that 16-year olds are more equipped to drive around in SUVs than they are to explore their own bodies and sexuality. That is sad. I know there are all kinds of social utility arguments for why we let 16-years old drive. These social utility arguments run along the lines of giving young adults the ability to explore their autonomy, to make forays into and explore the adult-world while still living at home with the advantage of parental support and guidance. I think that similar arguments stand for giving young adult girls access to vibrators. Even if you promote abstinence it seems like handing over the right to a vibrator would allow young adult women to explore their bodies and to become a little more comfortable with their own sexuality (and keep them out of the cucumber aisle - we all know what ickiness that can lead to...or using champagne bottles in inappropriate ways...) before thrusting them out into the marriage bed.
Disclaimer: No, I don't have to use champagne bottles all of the time, I am the best-laid gal in all of Brooklyn, remember? So vibrators are a rather moot topic...but I do own the pink one above...wink
And for the rest of us sex-aholics... there just doesn't seem to be a good reason to withhold the pleasure of a good vibration every now and again.
Resume Time
Two and a half months of law school and we're already reaching the first set of deadlines for securing summer employment options. I'm actually really excited about it.
One-Year Anniversary
Today marks the one-year anniversary of my return to Brooklyn. It has been the best year of my entire like so far. I say "so far" because I believe that the next year will be even better. In no small part that is because today marks the one-year anniversary of my life with the Love Of My Life and tomorrow will mark the three year mark of our first date. Isn't that cute?
We're just cute like that. Go as Autumn. We're obnoxious cute. And we don't even try to be...
Happy Day-After Halloween everyone...
