Rules of Southern Etiquette: What To Bring To A B.B.Q.
Rule #1: Banana Pudding. Period.
Problem: Neo-Southerners and their Yankee Counterparts who follow the recipe on the back of the pudding box.
Solution: Youre only real way around this is to get in good with a true, blue-blood Southern Belle.
Rule #2: Coleslaw. Made with Dukes Mayonnaise.
Problem: Dukes Mayonnaise is almost impossible to find North of the Mason-Dixon line.
Solution: Get in good with someone who frequently crosses the line and who doesnt mind importing a few jars of the yummy, white goodness for you.
Other Stuff, Near and Dear To My Heart
I recently got reconnected with one of my best-friends from college. We hadnt spoken in about three years. I didnt think that wed ever talk again. Youthful indiscretions and all that Well, out of the blue I get an e-mail from him and within the day were chatting on the phone like we were just hanging out a week ago. There are some friendships that are so special that you never quite forget them or get over them. You just keep missing that person even when you havent talked to them in years. You never know when you will come across someone special like thatsometimes (almost always, in my experience) it happens in the most unexpected places and at times when youre the least likely to be looking for them I do know that those friendships just dont come along very often. When they do, you should treasure them and hold on for dear life.
And sometimes you get a second chance when you fucked up the first time. But don't bank on it.
As Han said in that great 21st century classic film, The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift: You know who you are by the friends you choose.
Where Is The Snow?
I love this man.
Stupid humid summertime. There were times last winter...generally after a really icy day on the mountain...when I truly didn't know if I was going to wake up in the morning...or if my poor, bruised, battered, aching, purple/green/slightly orange body was just going to refuse. Now, I'd do just about anything to have a day back up there. Go figure.
