Wrapped Up Like Christmas
I spent the afternoon talking to a very nice photographer about lenses, why Nikons just dont compare to Canon digital cameras and the pros and cons of various brands of strobes. I was mostly naked during this conversationwrapped up in Christmas lights and tinsel and sipping sugar-free Redbull.
I love wearing Christmas lights. They really do make me feel sexy.
I do not love seeing my City wrapped up in Christmas lights two full weeks before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving, T-day, really is my favorite holiday. I have no problem with consumerism you should all buy me loads of lingerie, stockings, cashmere anything and photography books for Christmas but T-day is nice because it is simple and involves three of my favorite things: copious amounts of insanely fattening food, family/friends and (at least in my family) a yearly review of photos that generally runs for several hours until it is only me and my father sitting at the computer looking at all the pictures that no one else had the stamina to make it to.
I love to eat. I love to be with my family and friends. And I love looking at picturesover and over and over again. Perhaps it is the historian in me merged with my visual photographer sidea visual history of the people I love the mosteach year different pictures stand out, but some pictures will always be favorites. Each year there are a few more pictures that join that special favorites category.
This year I wont be spending T-day with my family. It is the first T-day that Ive missed. Ever. Ive missed a Christmas before when I was engaged I spent a Christmas with my ex-fiances family in the Hamptons. But never have I missed a T-day. This year Ill be spending T-day with someone very specialsomeone who makes me blush and warm even after everything. Im very excited about it.
Back to Christmas coming too early though
theyre already stringing the lights Christmas trees on the faade of Macys at 34th Street, even though they wont be switched on for another two weeks. The windows are covered the annual Christmas window displays covered to preserve the mystery of what well be treated to this year. But the Christmas carols are already being piped out in stores around Herald Square. Victorias Secret already has pre-packaged Christmas gifts ready for anyone needing to grab a quick gift (and lord, there are like a dozen things I want from Vickys this seasonoh! Sometimes I miss having a real job...)
And Im perfectly happy to dive into all the sparkly, shiny Christmas goodness, but Im not ready for Christmas carols yet. Im not ready to fly by T-day. Im not ready to buy fucking wrapping paper.
I have made my Christmas list though.

The Dwarves
You cant go wrong when you go see a punk band play when at least one member comes on stage COMPLETELY naked, every member of the band except the drummer crowd surfs at least twice during the show and the show ends with two members of the band beating an audience member with their guitars and the mic stand until hes bleeding. I recommend it if you get the chance. Just dont get too close to the stage if you want to keep your teeth or dont like the feel of guitar slicing skin.
Yeah, definitely not great pictures, but I'm out of practice and frankly, it was a bit more hardcore than I'm used to and there was a lot of "omg, Rupert is going to die..."
Bread
When I do make it back to the room where I live I walk along the block and about halfway down Im surrounded by the smell of baking cinnamon raisin bread. This is odd because there isnt a bakery on my block and because I have almost NO sense of smell. It makes me feel sadIm not sure whybut whenever I smell that I think about everything that has happened over the last 6 weekshow one thing gave way and another came back into my life. How different It All Is Now. It doesnt make a lot of sense to me yet, but it reminds me that sometimes you find what you werent expecting in the least likely places and times. I feel incredibly lucky. And happier than Ive been in a long, long time. Content. Warm. Like I can breathe deeper.
Hungry, too, after walking down my block again today.

i hate it when christmas decorations go up before thanksgiving. i hate feeling rushed through the holidays. thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and i'd like to enjoy it without having christmas trees shoved up my ass, thankyouverymuch
plus, all the christmas decorations feel like such a joke down here in Florida, since we don't get snow/seasonal change/etc. Le sigh.
So how's NYC, doll?
