I'm sure as soon as Jeff Kaplan said that artists like Sakmichan rolled their eyes and said: "Bitch, please." And to be perfectly honest unless D.Va does show up in the game perfectly nude I highly doubt she's going to break much of anything with just an in game skin.
However...
...the artist Liang-Xing might actually be on to something with this KDA inspired Tracer design. Now for those of you who live beneath rocks or in caves KDA shattered the scene with their redesign of four female League of Legends characters. The accompanying song: "Pop Star" was also a smash hit (I've practically got it memorized save for the parts in Korean) and ever since Overwatch fans have been wondering if Blizzard is going to follow suit. Now in D.Va's case it totally makes sense. In Busan, South Korea D.Va is a major celebrity and her visage graces the sides of skyscrapers throughout the city. Her name is spoken on the news and she has loaned her image to brand numerous products like energy drinks. She's also hugely popular in the real world among cosplayers on both sides of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. So you think it'd be a slam dunk that if Blizzard wants to follow the road paved by KDA then D.Va would be the front runner. But how realistic is that?
Recently a KPop group by the name of Cherry Bullet not only formed for the first time but a video popped up of one of the singers playing around with a customized D.Va Bunny Blaster. Naturally, this has set the Overwatch community ablaze with speculation about whether or not they are making some kind of music based on the game. The problem of course is that showing off a customized Bunny Blaster by itself means only three things. Jack. Diddly and shit. I mean come on, we see Overwatch imagery all the time on Youtube in content created by independent artists. It's not a stretch to think that the band simply got permission to use the prop in their video or that the fact that the blaster is customized means that it could be covered under fair use. But that doesn't mean it isn't a really cool fucking idea.
Now over the last year Blizzard has been really cagey about what it is they've been doing to Overwatch. A small number of fans have even speculated that Blizzard is throwing in the towel on Overwatch as far as new content and the game will remain stagnant ala CS;GO. While numerous interviews and articles have surfaced reassuring the community that Blizzard is indeed working on something we have no real clue as to what that something is. The new Workshop toolkit that goes live potentially as early as Tuesday (May 21st) is by itself evidence enough that Blizzard is still very hard at work on Overwatch but what have they been doing? A new D.Va skin by itself isn't anything that takes a year to plan out unless A: it isn't "just a skin" or B: like the workshop they've got plans that none of us have any real idea what they are. Speculation abounds but real answers are as elusive as the chupacabra.
Which brings me back to this D.Va skin. No skin by itself can "break the internet." That statement suggests that whatever this skin is it's going to become popular among more than just Overwatch fans or even gamers for that matter. While D.Va's Black Cat and Nano Cola skins were both insanely popular when they were announced that popularity was centered on Overwatch fans alone. Which of course brings me back to the KPop angle. While I threw shade on the idea that this band Cherry Bullet is somehow involved that doesn't mean that Blizzard hasn't licensed out other singers or bands to create music for Overwatch centered around D.Va. Black Pink is probably the hottest KPop band on the planet right now (they set a record with their latest music video on Youtube) and if you really want to break the internet those four young ladies cosplaying Overwatch characters would do it. Then again, that would be a pretty sizeable check Blizzard would have to write and considering their financial losses as of late that's probably more of a stretch than a brand new band of relatively nameless singers.
The bottom line is that "breaking the internet" is a really strong statement and when you consider some of the things that have happened on that scale a new skin for a video game character isn't going to cut it. Something is attached to that skin and despite my misgivings a KPop song and music video is the most likely route. But of course, like the workshop it could be something completely different that we aren't even considering. Either way, we'll know May 21st.
I can't wait!
