Michelle is sitting down outside a coffee shop drinking a cup of coffee. A cigarette burns in her her hand and she scans her tablet. Leroy walks up to her table.
Leroy: "This seat taken?"
Michelle: "Yeah. By you." Smiles "How's life? Or should I say death?"
Leroy: "Haha. Shouldn't I be asking you that?"
Michelle: smiles and rolls her eyes. "What's up?"
Leroy: "Nothing we can talk about here I'm afraid. Your now ex boyfriend had some very nasty friends."
Michelle: "So? I died remember?"
Leroy: "I don't know Michelle, this isn't your normal bad crowd. This sounds more like who you used to run with back in the day."
Michelle: "You think someone knows about me?"
Leroy: "I don't think it was a coincidence you were dating that particular guy. You were set up."
Michelle: "Hmmm, let's see who would be gutsy enough and stupid enough to bring that back again?"
Leroy: "Anyone you used to know that's still alive?"
Michelle: Gives him a sarcastic look.
Leroy: "You're right, bad question."
Michelle: "I'm old Leroy. So old I can't even remember where I was born. My family, my friends all a blur. I think I had siblings but unless I can find my birth records... unlikely I'll never know for sure. Besides, it's not like I keep ties with those from my past. "
Leroy: "Well there's me."
Michelle: "You're different. You're special." winks.
Leroy: blushes "Thanks."
Michelle: "Well if they really want me dead unless they know I can't die there's a good chance they'll never bother me again. I'm sorry, I don't think I'm going to be able to help you much."
Leroy: "Well maybe we can start from the beginning. But not here. Dinner at your place?"
Michelle: "Better make it yours. I'm not exactly living stable yet."
Leroy: "8pm my place?"
Michelle: "It's a date."
Michelle enters the front door of Leroy's place.
Leroy: "Welcome."
Michelle: "Thanks. Nice place. They pay you pretty well for taking care of dead people."
Leroy: "Let's just say my job isn't exactly in high demand. Hope you're hungry."
Michelle: "Nope, I never get hungry. I only eat cause I like to."
Leroy: "Really? What sustains you?"
Michelle: shrugs "Don't know, don't care." sits down at the dinner table while Leroy walks into the kitchen. "Maybe I'm solar powered?"
Leroy: "Well I hope you can still taste my award winning steak dinner with baked potato."
Michelle: "Mmmmm, yum. Taste I can do. And smell."
Leroy: "You know I don't think we've ever talked about what makes you, you."
Michelle: "You never asked and that's not something I'm eager to volunteer. Unless it's necessary which at the moment it seems to be. You really think someone might know about me?"
Leroy: "I don't know for sure. Just a suspicion. Your ex called someone named 'Chastity' right after he killed you. Not sure what the details of the call were and you killed him before anything could come of it. We tried to trace the call but it was to a pay as you go phone. Fake name, fake address. Whoever Chastity is she went to an awful lot of trouble to keep from being found."
Michelle: "I just assumed she was who he was cheating on me with." shrugs
Leroy: "You knew he was cheating on you?"
Michelle: "Of course. I don't sleep so I don't have much to do at night so I stalk my lovers sometimes. Sometimes it gets me killed, sometimes it makes me even more bored and I kill myself."
Leroy: "That's not funny."
Michelle: "I'm not laughing."
Leroy: "What are you getting at?"
Michelle: "Whoever is after me, if anyone at all is probably just like me. Just as old and just as bored. Immortality isn't what you humans think it is. After so many years you have a hard time staying motivated to do or be anything anymore. There aren't many of us left because at some point we just give up trying to live and find new and creative ways to die. Each time we do we hope it'll be the last. The lucky ones found ways to stay dead. Others of us just got frustrated until..." Looks away ashamed.
Leroy: "Until what?"
Michelle: "Until 9 fucking 11 alright?!" Holds herself and fights back tears. Leroy runs to her side and hugs her. "You don't know what it's like. Waking up every day after who knows how many hundreds of years wishing you had just stayed asleep. I've stayed in bed for weeks just hoping I would waste away and become nothing. There were times I was so desperate to stay dead that I seriously thought there was nothing I wouldn't do, no matter who got hurt." Looks at Leroy with tears running down her face.
Leroy: "Do you mean..?"
Michelle: "If someone like me is throwing human lives away just to find out what I am they are probably the most dangerous being walking the surface of the Earth right now."
