Dear sir/madam,
I am writing to you about your current proposal to close BBC 6 music. I have been a long time listener of 6 music, it was also one of the only reasons I purchased a digital radio. Without your station I would have never heard of bands like Sky Larkin (who were named in the BBCs best albums you never heard list in 2009), The XX, Gil Scott Heron, White Rabbits, Elle Milano, Emmy the Great and the list goes on. Also I would have been never introduced to comedians such as Russell Howard, Jon Richardson and Matt Ford.
The whole point of the station as many of the DJs point out is to play music that other radio stations wont play. There will never ever be a commercial music station that will do this and as one of your five editorial priorities is to Inspiring knowledge, music and culture by closing down 6 music you are straight away disregarding one of you priorities. Also there are no real alternative radio stations in Wales other than Nation radio (which offers only new music by commercially popular bands and the same old music repeated day after day, very boring and I never listen to it) there will be very little access to new bands. Referring to The BBC says 6 Music "competes head-on for a commercially valuable audience" and would damage the commercial stations if it tried to attract more listeners, Why should the BBC worry about other commercial stations, if they arent providing their listeners with what they want and lose listeners that is their problem not that of the BBC.
There is no other music station in the UK where the DJs have a genuine love of music and are not on the radio to massage their egos. I believe this is the main reason people tune in and to lose this station would make me lose quite a lot of faith in the BBC.
Make the right decision
