And as it turns out, bipolar is eerily similar to epilepsy, in fact, some of the medication used to treat it is the same as what a doctor would give to an epilepsy patient. So, if you're like me and relying on this diet, I have a few hacks that help avoid the negative effects. I use the wim hof method to regulate the pH level in my blood (and it's also useful for regulating hormonal levels which is a big problem for people with bipolar), there's sugar free metamucil which will give you the fiber without kicking you out of ketosis (and is actually pretty good with lime and tequila... Just sayin), using bone broth is a way to get around that bone depletion that's mentioned (but I have to look more into this one). Ketosis is very hard to maintain, so if you get off it, bulletproof coffee (coffee blended with butter and mct oil) is a life saver. This is a very tedious diet and like the article says, is usually only prescribed to kids because adults have a very hard time keeping it up. I'm pretty proud of myself even though I've fallen off several times this year, but I manage to keep going with the help of mindfulness meditation, which helps me to find that mental strength needed to keep this up. Dealing with Bipolar is a second job and feels like a giant feat of acrobatics in trying to avoid symptoms of it, but it's worth it, for the sake of stability. For my friends who suffer from bipolar and epilepsy (also Parkinson's disease), take care and take this post under consideration, because even though medication is alluring and a life saver at times, it puts a toll on your liver and can shorten your lifespan by 20 years.
