So I wrote this graphic novel called Local. It was just published in a collected hardcover, and right now you can read what I feel is the best story from it here, for free:

myspace comics

It's a book I am massively proud of, and something I think any of you guys would appreciate.

About the book: From Brian Wood (Demo, DMZ, Northlanders) and Ryan...

I used to be more active here. Now I lurk from time to time and check in with friends. But who's out there still? Anyone receiving me?

Just back myself after a year absence, always fun to hear what Brian Wood has to talk about.

I was off for a bit before my unfortunate return as well.

What's up?

That is a great cover. A bit softer than your usual work but it still looks damn fine.

So I write comics and graphic novels. In fact, I write so many of them I forget to update this blog, here. Some new books and a preview artwork from last week's Comic-Con.

Northlanders, by socio-political series about Vikings:

A new Wood/Kelly project will be welcomed. I still can't decide if your work looks better with color accent or in the diy black and white, but we usually get both and so I don't have to decide.

Looks as if she's thinking "Dad, why aren't you pushing me??? This is a SWING!"

Oh yea, I bought a duplicate copy of DMZ 16 by mistake, but it's still well worth it! And I can't wait for my t-shirt to arrive so I'll be safe when I wander out of the "Free Speech Zones".

And if you ever need a Chicago guide for "Local", please keep me in mind. Seriously, I can round up all the info you need.
lotusmonger:
hah, whoops! Just checked it out. And to think I grew up and still live in Wicker Park!

"Do You Support The Troops?"

I get asked this more often than you might think sometimes in interviews, sometimes in casual emails, and other times more aggressively, as if the person asks me already suspects how I might answer. One person at a convention asked me this before he would engage me in conversation, I guess to suss out if he was...

I agree with you that the question itself is spurious. It's usually a "clever" tool for trying to suss out someone's politics in a very broad, ingenuine way.

People who are really concerned may want to phraze the question more like, "do you appreciate the sacrifices our armed forces make to ensure our freedoms," or something like that. Appreciating the troops seems more meaningful that "supporting" them.

Does that make sense? Or is it all just semantics?
brianwood:
Except that the mission they're on does fuck all to ensure anyone's freedoms, except maybe corporate freedom to make profits.

I don't think the answer is to come up with new questions. Obviously no one wants more soldiers to die. Once everyone's on that same page, the question and answer kind of takes care of itself.
