Is this a stupid idea for a tattoo?
(I asked this on Gay girls only and i will probably ask on the tattoo thread also since that's the obvious place)
Katrina Warrior emblem
a mixture of a heart, a fleur de lis (stylized iris, symbol for New Orleans, also used of course for other things, Quebec, etc), and yes, it's a vagina.
Katrina Warriors is pro-woman movement in post-Katrina New Orleans, created in cooperation with Eve Ensler (Vagina Monologues, Vagina Warriors, V-day, etc.). It focuses on stopping violence against women.
I saw this at the first Katrina Warriors event last year at a local university, described in the link.Katrina Warriors
Why I like it, and thought of using it as a tattoo:
To me it symbolizes: Being a survivor, both of Katrina and of incest; My love for New Orleans; My love for women.
The symbol is under a Creative Commons license (not copyrighted), which means you can't use it in a commercial context w/out permission, so I am not stepping on legal toes.
Why I'm wary:
1. Is it stupid to get somebody's slogan tattooed on my body, no matter what it symbolizes to me?
2. Is it so obvious a vagina, that people will ask, uh why do you have a tattoo of a vagina?
3. Is it silly to get a vagina symbol tattooed anyway? I would probably think it was funny if a guy got a penis tattooed on his body.

by the way, Charmaine Neville, related to the Neville Brothers, has an amazing Katrina story. She stayed in New Orleans (she lives in my neighborhood, the Bywater) because she didn't have a car, and she wouldn't have been able to take her pets if she went with others. (Her pets died anyway in the flooding.)
When the levees broke and the waters came, she and several others escaped to the top floor of a school. (She said she saw alligators swimming in the waters.) Their small group was attacked and several of the women were raped, including her.
She then helped lead her group out of the 9th ward, found an abandoned city bus, stole it, and drove them out of New Orleans.
Besides being a succesful musician, she is now the spokesperson for RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network). You will see her in public service announcements saying she was raped, and encouraging people to come forward about the violence that they suffered or are suffering.
