A buddy of mine IMed me the other day with the most curious question:
Him: "Do you still have your D&D books?"
Me: "Uh.. no. I left them at Kevin's when I moved out of there." (about 8 years ago)
Him: "Oh. Well we're talking about getting a group back together. you wanna play?"
At this point my brain went into overdrive. "what the fuck? You're 30 years old. people your age don't play D&D. Besides, you don't know the new rules, and you know if you play, they'll make you DM. " This was constrasted with things like, "Well, I figure I'd be a lot better at DMing now than I was back when I was a kid. I've got a lot more life experience, and a lot more things to draw on for inspiration." but then the left side of my brain took back over: "WTF idiot? You're THIRTY YEARS old, you have no dice, no miniatures, no books and you haven't touched a pen and paper RPG in forever."
My mouth, of course, was much less verbose than my brain.
Me: "yeah, okay."
So I guess I'm playing D&D again. I bought the new books, and have been figuring out the new rules. I think I like them. I still need some dice. I've come up with a campaign, which will either be epic, or will devolve into complete chaos. Either way, I win. I'm making the players make characters that probably won't like one another. This should be interesting.
I am arch nerd.
