My favorite candy bar is Snickers. I was examining one the other day after I bit into it and was marvelling at it's splendor. All the yummy ingredients laid bare.
chocolate... mmm.
caramel... mmm.
peanuts.... mmm.
Nougat..m... uh... what the fuck IS nougat anyway, and what does it add to this candy bar?
First questions first, what the fuck is it? It's obviously not naturally occurring. I've never seen any third world (or other) country that lists nougat as one of its primary resources or exports. So then, it must be man made. To find it's origin, I decided to consult the all-knowing, all powerful oracle the internet, Google. This is what she told me:
"Nougat is a confectionery made with sugar or honey, roasted nuts (almonds, walnuts, pistachios or hazelnuts are common) and sometimes chopped, candied fruit. The consistency of nougat can range from chewy to hard depending on its composition. White nougat is made with beaten egg white and is soft, whereas brown nougat is made with caramelized sugar and has a firmer texture. "
OK, so... yeah. That helps a little, but I still don't know why it's in so many candy bars. I went to 7-11 and got a 3 Musketeers bar, because it's like almost all nougat. I broke it in half and scooped out some of this mysterious substance and ate it. I was highly underwhelmed. It's like the rice cakes of candy. It has basically no taste and is mostly air. Completely useless. The only reason I can think that it's in so much candy is that it's cheap filler that doesn't ruin the taste of the other things.
I am completely indifferent to nougat.
