I came home from work the other morning, parked my car, came inside, and about an hour later heard a knock on my front door.
It was a cop.
I open the door, and ask him, "what's going on?" He replies, "why don't you tell me?" He has me step out into the middle of the lawn and look across the street. I see my car in the neighbors front yard. The driveway is on the side of the house and apparently the parking brake failed and the car rolled down the driveway and across the street.
I'm still completely confused as to how it could have happened, since my driveway is on a rather steep incline, and if the brake wasn't set when I parked, I'd have been in the street before I could get out of the car. When I took a look in the window, i could see that the parking brake handle was all the way down. wtf.
Luckily there was no damage to my car, and the only thing it hit in the neighbor's yard was a little light along his sidewalk, which was easily repaired.
The cop went on to tell me that since I wasn't at the scene of the accident when it was reported, it was technically a hit-and-run. Thankfully, he dropped that charge once he realized that I lived about 40 feet from the accident.
There's nothing like a wakeup call from the cops to ruin your day.
