Why is the phrase "be quiet" considered more polite than "shut up?" It doesn't make any sense. They're both commands telling someone to cease and desist all talking activities immediately. I mean, I can understand someone taking offense to "silence fool," since they're being called a name in addition to being told not to speak. Now there's something to get your knickers in a twist over.
When you get down to it, though, they're not really the same thing. "Be quiet" is, in fact, more rude as it is a double command. You're not only telling the person what to do, you're also telling them how to be. Therefore, you should all immediately remove both "shut up" and "be quiet" from your vocabularies. The world will be a better place without them.
From now on, we will all be like tennis judges. "quiet please. Thank you."
P.S. The "tuck rule" can suck my grandfather's cock.
