OK so I sent off some white label pre-release solo CDs. Not knowing what to expect ... vanity really. The first review is in, from Bubblegum Slut, one of the UK's top fanzines (or so sez the NME, rendering it suspect, but this time I believe them...)
It says:
The Henderson Shatners - Henderson (Tapewyrm Records)
Henderson Shatners day job is bass player for the remarkably talented Brand Violet, who have been universally acclaimed tonnes of times in past Sluts.
The craftily titled Henderson Shatners would be his solo project, although BVs Dafydd Jones and Baby Igor make more than a brief appearance as well. First impressions are great: there is a fantastic fishnet clad arse on the cover. Top marks for that notion! Track one Los Musculos is a bizarre Spanish (?) piano backed song, and I am sure that there is summat hilarious going on, but not speaking Spanish I guess I will never find out what the big joke is!
For the rest of the album Henderson has not strayed too far from Brand Violets shady surf pop, that so defies all attempts at being categorised. The
songs may be a little darker, but the song writing is obviously from the same source.
That twisted sense of humour is present on the song Cool Tattoo with the line You give me hives whenever you kissed me/But you could have given me so much more, and next song On The Floor has a melody not light years away from Argylle Gargoyl Grrl. All that is really missing is Sally-Ann Marshs naughty schoolgirl vocals.
Henderson doesnt have a bad voice, but it is curious that he kept these songs for himself and didnt submit them to Brand Violet.
I gotta recommend this record simply because it is by a top notch songwriter who is running way ahead of the pack

I reckon that's pretty good as reviews go, especially the songwriter bit.
Actually, I think Brand Violet might get around to doing 1-2 of the tracks at some point, with Brian James producing them.
I suppose the solo album had to happen for sanity's sake. Mine. Clearing the pipes, infusing energy and creativity into plastic to give it life. To put something in the air that wasn't there before. Songs are songs, I'll make more, like Doritos. Consumables.
Igor's done one as well and we were joking about putting them on the same CD -- then looked at each other once we stopped laughing and said, "Actually, that's quite a good idea." So that will probably happen - A Double Dose or something like that.
