as if i didnt have enough on my plate, ive started learning japanese. im sure my spelling is abominable but the translation was, "good morning. i know a little japanese. i am not very good."
i downloaded an e-audio course from the library and i do my lessons in the car on the way to and from work. i actually find that thanks to this, i've started looking forward to the commute. nothing better than learning a language to pass the time while sitting in gridlock. its a bit awkward learning a language without any textbooks. but i am getting the pronunciation down and picking up the context. i figure if my dad can become fluent in spanish after starting to learn the language about 5 years ago, i can do the same. my goal is to take my oldest daughter to japan when she graduates high school. thats exactly 5 years from now.
plus, when i used to run my own business, i had a girl who worked for me who was from japan. she was nice enough to write out and explain to me the hiragana and katana (two of the three sets of characters used in japan...kanji is the third and is incredibly expansive with thousands of characters as opposed to the few dozen found in hiragana and katakana). as i have started these lessons i can see how writing these words in japanese characters would be way easier than writing them in romanji or western characters. i just need to find someone to speak it with so i can keep up my practice.
nihongo wakari mas ka?
keeping with the asian theme, i am taking my oldest daughter to an anime convention this weekend. she has been super excited and has a bunch of her own drawings that she wants to get reviewed. her mom doesnt appreciate or understand her creative side and sees her obsession with drawing and anime as a distraction to her schoolwork and (probably) an undesireable influence of mine on her. i really dont care what her mom thinks. i am going to support my childs passion for this particularly as it has provided a means for the two of us to grow much closer together.
this is going to be a good weekend. i head up to pittsburgh after work today and stay with one of my favorite "friends" in the whole wide world. i havent seen her since january so there could be a lot of "making up for lost time" (our last meeting invovled ropes, blindfolds, candles, ice cubes and lots of rest the next day). then i get my daughter from school at lunch tomorrow and hit the road to head back here. i got a weekend pass for the convention but i think we will probably only go on saturday. although if cosplay is tomorrow night, we may head out for that too. i have to check the schedule again.
i've been reasonably productive this week. more so than i have been but less than i wanted. i think its just because i set the bar so high for myself. i am encouraged by my progress however. work could get interesting soon. my manager, who is the director of the division, is going through a series of medical evaluations for stress-related health issues. guess who he asked to run the ship in his absence? as if i didnt have enough to deal with.
(side note: whats with all these goofy emoticons? does anyone ever use or or ? weird)
well, i gotta get my bags packed and head off to the plantation...er i mean office.

I would love to learn Italian, but it just seems to hard, good for you for keeping up with wanting to learn, and I think its awesome that your daughter has that artistic ability...do we get to see any of her work?...too bad her mom doesnt support this...and i love the little emoticons, I just wish they would offer us some new ones.
