Mood: ‘Blue Moon’ by The Marcels
Just What IS A ‘Blue Moon’ & Why Is It Rare?
Simply put, two full moons in a month are considered a ‘blue moon’, having nothing to do, unfortunately, with the actual color of it. In general, this is an event that happens once every three years or so, so it is a rare thing.
Yeah, that caption is concerning a ‘rare supermoon’. So just what in The Heavens is that? When the Moon is at it’s closet approach to Earth on it’s elliptical orbit, or at it’s perigee, it is a ‘super moon’, and is something like 14% larger and some 30% brighter. As shown in the above graphic, to have both a Blue and Super moon is an event that occurs once every 10 years or so, and so is very rare, indeed!
What Makes A Blue Moon So Special?
Other than its relative rareness, there are some myths associated with the even of such an orb in our skies.
Fir instance, in some European countries of the distant past, the blue moon was said to be the time for wolves to roam freeer, too descend into those places populated by humans. It is blieved that the myths concerning werewolves may have their genesis during these Blue Moons (which is somewhat amusing considering the music choices in ‘An American Werewolf In London’ movie!). There are also some European myths that believed that the Blue Moon was a portent for when evil in the form of demons were freed into the land or signified when demons were strong enough to attack.
May your Blue Moon never turn to gold!
