The Beginnings of Greater Freedoms
This day, 1776:
Big week in the United States. Whether you agree with History or not, great things began when when colonies of England reacted against the tyrannical oppression of its mother country. Yet, at that time, there were still many, many inequities endemic in the culture, a British culture that was beginning to evolve into a different, separate one.
Still, where many think that middle class women were leading the proverbial ‘barefoot and in the kitchen’ kind of life, it was anything but. John Adams’ wife, Abigail, ran the Adams farm, from planning crops to hiring hands, to meeting out wages and handling the books, making sure her husband had all he needed to attend to his political duties. Now, from many accounts, John Adams was an abrasive personality to those he disagreed with and had many enemies, even unto at least one of his own children, if accounts can be believed. However, even as he expected his wife to do as he asked, he was also quiet, quite devoted to her and knew her for the strong woman she was.
As I say, it was the beginning of greater freedoms, and I believe made greater advances than other countries in them, even eventually affecting the policies of other countries, though this is certainly up to debate. Many of these ‘new’ freedoms took many years, some are still waiting their turn, but we advance further every year.
Be well, all!
