okay, so i really don't feel like writing a review of Land of the Dead, so i will briefly summarize my opinions:
1. Best zombie movie of the last fifteen years or so, best zombie movie probably since George A. Romero did Day of the Dead. It certainly embarrassed the shit out of the Dawn of the Dead remake and that dumb movie with the fast zombies and the virus and the irish people, what the fuck was that called?
2. An embarrassing way to end the series. Not a good enough movie to break a trilogy with. It had no theme, it had no connection to the earlier films and it said absolutely nothing about the human condition. It was the horror genre equivalent of gonzo pornography. They just turned on the cameras and filmed things that the audience wanted to see without making a statement. If, I want to watch people fuck I watch porn. If I want to watch people talk, understand one another and make decisions that have impact, I watch a regular movie.
3. Zombie Tom Savini!!!
4. The opening scene is the best scene in the movie. The cinematography is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous and the weirdness evoked by the zombie band in the gondola is incredible. This is the subtle touch that makes a George A. Romero zombie film, his use of the zombie to make a statement about day-to-day life. Sadly, he stopped making statements six minutes into the film.
5. I hate John Leguizamo less than I did before, but I still don't like him.
6. It's sad to see that the briliant mind responsible for Night of the Living Dead one of the finest horror films of all time, equally horrifying today as yesterday and an incredible statement about society during that time, has sunken into being a strictly genre-oriented filmmaker. It is inconsquential that he is one of the finest that the genre has to offer. Even a film of his, like Bruiser which is bizarre, beautiful and deeply poetic, still falls prey to the genre trappings and cannot rise above the pack on the quality of it's artistic merits.

well, i wrote more than I wanted to, so i take back my original statement about not reviewing the movie.
in other news, i also just wrote the first draft of a 7 page letter i am sending to my father. I decided yesterday that i really should tell him everything that i'm thinking about him one of these days, just put it all in his lap, for him to deal with and not me. so, what are three things you would tell your father if you had to. here's some of the stuff going in my letter:
1. i know you don't believe in me, but you really should since i have done nothing but prove you wrong for five years.
2. i don't respect you as much as i respect my mother; i do not feel as close to your side of the family as i do to my mom's side of the family. also, this does not bother me.
3. it is okay with me that you spend all of your money on your second family, because i know deep down, that having a wife and children to come home to makes your life feel like it's worth living and i would never begrudge you of that. you can have a house, a pool, tvs and computers, SUVs and send my half-sisters to private school, because really, i'm glad you are happy with your life; you just can't expect me to treat you like my father or give you any respect, because you have walked away from me every time that i have humbled myself to ask for your help financially.
