Woo! Lots of shite going on! Spent 5 days in Orlando setting up a meeting for our jobs, me and my hunny got to meet the boss, her hubby and the rest of the team. She took us all out to dinner at these amazing resort restaurants for 2 nights where we ate ourselves silly on seafood, filet mignon and creme brulee.
These people are the nicest, most down-to-earth folks going. My boss loves my crazy red hair and Witch shirt. She is this happy big-hearted lady who is brilliant, fun, loves her work and treats her people like gold. I so love this gig!!! It's almost too good to be true. I would go to Siberia for this woman she treats me so well.
Mi madre came down with her best friend Nancy to stay at Nancy's daughter's condo in Delray Beach. The daughter, Mary paid for my mom and Nancy's tix to fly from Boston.
Nancy is also a brilliant, happy big-hearted lady who is very close to my mom. My mom is a bit of a loner and doesn't trust many folks, but Nancy is the light of her life. Nancy is also very ill...she's in her 70's and very frail in body, needs walkers and oxygen tanks. So my mom and dad, who live in the same condo building with her back home, take care of her quite a bit. Basically, "taking care" means cooking fine food, drinking wine and laughing....and being there when the doctor needs to be called, which is often.
She is so amazing. She's a tough but loving Irish Catholic Boston waitress. She's like this wisecracking, hilarious, worldy young woman trapped in an alien body that is her enemy. If she wasn't so frail I swear every man she smiles and jokes with would pick her up and twirl her around.
Nancy has 9 grown kids. Her kids are all amazing, and they all love and take care of her. We've met 3 down here so far. All of us had dinner then went home to drink and tell stories. This is the happiest my mom has ever been. She's had a tough life, and Nancy has shown her what a true friend really is. She's even shown me.
Nancy knows she doesn't have much time left, and most people her age might just give up and let their body jail them. Not her. We all know full well something could happen to her to put her in the hospital again while she's down here escaping the snow, but it's a risk she demands to take. She demands to laugh with her friends and family and to defy the illness. She told me if she died today she'd be fine with it, as long as she's doing what she wants and not holed up in some airless bedroom in a wheelchair all day.
So, provided we have all our mental faculties intact when we get old, I hope that we all can give death the finger and live life to the fullest till it's time to go. Defiance is a virtue.
We brought my mom and Nancy to our place for a visit. We were going to drive them to South Beach when Nancy started to look pained. My mom freaked of course and Nancy admitted to pains in the chest. We debated about bringing her back to Delray, 45 minutes north, but decided to take her to Aventura Hospital 5 minutes down the road.
She stayed the night. We drove my poor mom back to Delray. Nancy's son stayed with her till late night.
Today they ruled out heart and all other major problems, and said it was probably muscle strain. She's feeling fine and I'm sure wants to stay up late drinking wine and bullshitting at the kitchen table, making my mom laugh. My mom has always been my hero, but Nancy is the angel for our whole family. Every visit to the hospital is a day closer to losing her.
What do you want to be like when you're 70?
Why do you love your closest friend?
