I spent Saturday clearing brush behind my house. I woke up yesterday with a fat case of poison ivy. What was that song by Velvet Underground in which Lou Reed sings, "I've got my calomine lotion?" I can hear the tune in my head, but the title eludes me. I wish I hadn't given away my VU records. (Does that date me or what?)
Today at work a coworker was imitating a Southern accent disparagingly. Cultural insensitivity still shocks me, even though I've seen it again and again.
Today I have been trying to think of all the words in the English language that started out as military, hunting, violence-related, or weapon-related terms then took on different meanings as people used them in common discourse. Impact, target, bullet, bull's-eye, trigger, bombshell, bomb, bivouac, reconnaissance, reconnoiter, flak . . . . I know there are others . . . .
Yes, it's an esoteric subject, but esoterica seems to be my normalcy.
Hey! Now I remember the name of that VU song. It was "Foggy Notion." VU rhymed notion with lotion. That's hilarious.
