You need to build up your inner confidence, you've already pointed out in your post the qualities as a person you possess so you need to focus on those, stay true to yourself. I get the feeling a big part of not being able to talk to girls is through fear that the same thing will happen again, it's true that some people are that way inclined but not everyone has been painted with that brush. Perhaps you need to go around it a different way, lay all your cards on the table when you meet someone you like (like building a friendship first) that way a girl knows exactly what she is getting into without wondering if you are stringing her along. Remind yourself it's OK to get close to someone, put a little trust in there, just don't allow yourself to get too close too fast or dependant on her. I totally understand how you feel here, it's going to take a lot of faith and balls on your part. But it will pay off :)
