The closer we get to the 18th, the more and more I am dreading turning 29.
30, i'll handle
29? seems so final
I had to do something for myself. But what.
So, I leave my house today around 4. I'll stop. get some lunch. Head to Ego's for the regular weekly slam, set up, dj, tear down. go home. Work.
I lead what some could describe as a semi-charmed life. Work for myself. Make upper middle class money doing so. Got good friends. Run Austin's most active burlesque show. It's not bad. And I know that. I look good on paper.
I'm also almost Almost 30. and divorced. With bad credit. And blah blah blah.
I had to do something for myself, but what.
When I was 6, I saw Beat Street for the first time. When we got home, I snuck my mom's copy of Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" into my room and threw it onto the record player with the built in 8 track. I tried to see if my little first grade hands into the hands of the only elementry school aged half jewish white female DJ ever to come out of Briarwood, Queens. And then I could learn to do The Robot. Ozone would SURELY fall in love with me then!
And just for the record, 6 year old with a turntable, trying to scratch out something to "Better be good to me" sounds just as awful as you'd think
When I tried it a few days later to "Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam" it was no better.
And I'd keep trying it every so often, thinking that THAT day would be the day that God would bless me with the gift of scratchin'
So, I continued down 35. Exited Riverside. Was going to pull into Egos but kept driving. Made a right on Elizabeth and a left on South First.
I walked into DJ Manny's record shop.
"I want to learn to DJ. I'm turning 29 and I've wanted to do this since I was 6"
And starting next week, I will be under very capable hands.
