Rough day in the life of this central Texas girl. It is hard for me to share personal tragedy when I'm not typing it out and a verbal "what's wrong" from a friend can force tears to spill forth through gritted teeth.
I quietly excused myself home, crawled under the covers and put on the 12:30am showing of King of the Hill.
After a while, i got bored, so i turned off the light and looked up at the ceiling and listened to the woosh of the ceiling fan and the sound of the wind on the other side of my window. and then... the weirdest thing... i saw a brilliant streak of greenish light arc from one end of the ceiling to the other across the room, so bright it lasted there in my eyes for a moment, like a tracer...
and i was like, "what?"
and there it was again, the same greenish light jetting in a circle around the fan blades, and my kitties saw it, too, because they stood at attention and watched for it with me.
and again.
a firefly.
somehow, a lone firely had gotten caught in my house, and it was flying around trying to find its way, flashing his bum's green light looking for a mate. that's what it's for, you know, that green light, it's supposed to attract a mate. perhaps something about the quality of the light indicates its health and stamina and insectly manliness or something, and the lady fireflies come a-flocking, blinking their asses in the expectation of woo.
by the looks of it, though... there weren't any other fireflies in this room, hence a sad lack of woo... nothing in this room except me and the cats and my tv and my computer... there is pretty much no chance in my experience of being the only one of your kind in this room and finding anyone remotely attracted to your special brand of shine. mostly, you just spend your time going around in circles because you've lost your way.
and then...
BINK
little dude strayed too close to the whirling blades of the ceiling fan, his arcing green light ricochetting as he icarused down down down very slowly to my sofa where he just stopped with a soft ploomp and his green light slowly slowly slowly drained to darkness. the kitties pounced on the futon to investigate, but i hissed them away. i picked the little guy up and checked out his backside, and you could still see flirtations in his belly, but they were all blotchy and fading fast.
i walked through the living room in my underwear and opened the door to the backyard and padded barefoot across the patio to the green of the lawn, and then i gently placed him on a blade of grass. the backyard was filled with fireflies, all flashing their little green come-ons, trying their damndest to shine with all their might and find each other in the dark.
the tips of my fingertips glowed with little green specks... like some of his light juice spilled out of him as i picked him up.
poor little dude.
looking for love in all the wrong places.
