He called last night around 10:30.
"It's tuesday. Right?", he asks
"yeah"
"I just woke up. What are you doin."
"Watching tv. Nothing is on though."
We discuss the fact that we thought there was a spurs game on but that its actually on the next night and that we really miss Space Ghost Coast to Coast. We spend 10 minutes trying to figure out the name of the rock guy on 'Home Movies'.
2 for 1 burgers at Sonic are a joy on Tuesdays and his home feels empty when his Xbox is at the pawn shop.
I admit I've stopped changing chanels now that I've found one of the Spanish station showing Police Academy 2.
He says he is sorry for calling and bothering. I tell him he is no bother and I love his calls.
Half an hour goes by and we politely say goodnight. I promise to call him the next day.
I get out of work today at 6:26 and call him in hopes he can keep me company on my drive up to Hyde Park Theatre. His phone is off. SxSW meeting. He mentioned something about that.
I show up at the theatre at 6:50. After a brief check in and runthrough, Jessica and I go get pizza across the street. We draw pictures on steno paper with Crayola markers. I tell how Eirik agreed to volunteer for SxSw and agreed to do so much to help make me look good in the eyes of my guy. Minutes later, the phone rings and it is him.
"What are you up to?"
"I'm eatin pizza with my friend. You?"
"Just finished a meeting for South by. Where ya'll at"
"The Parlor. The one on 43rd street."
he pauses
"do you wanna come by?", I ask.
"Well, if youre almost finished or whatever..."
"No! Really. Come over. We have half a pizza we wont finish."
He tells me he'll be there in a few minutes and I run to the ladies room to put on makeup.
He walks in the door. I wave. He gets a beer, sits down and I slide the plate of lukewarm pizza his way. I tell him about the show going on across the street and how we've agreed to help.
My friend Katie shows up in time to snag the last slice of pie. After that, a nervous Eirik walks in. He asks my guy if he'd be willing to pretend to be his bartender in the show. Wayne quickly asks what he would have to do. A rundown is given and wayne agrees to help. My friends are convinced it is an attempt to impress me.
He asks me to play a game of pinball. Star Trek: The next geration pinball with worn out flippers. I beat him after the first ball but he ends up with double my score. I let him gloat. More familiar faces join our table. Its like a crazy version of "This is your life". Last night, I told Eirik about moments when I know G-d is there. This is one of those moments.
We smoke and talk and we share the pictures we have on eachother's phones. His brother's cat. A picture of me showing my affection for Rain-x since my windshield wipers aren't working.
We walk across the street just before showtime. He asks if he looks alright. I pretend to straighten out the lapels on his jean jacket. I roll a pack of smokes in his sleeve. He tells me he's gonna do his part in the show and then bail.
Show starts. Its obvious the audience loves it already.
We all do our bit and after wayne does his, he comes back and, worried, asks if he did ok. I smile and tell him he did great. His nervousness makes me melt. I ask if he's gonna go and he says he wants to stay til the end.
Show finishes, he taps my shoulder and as I turn, he turns his face to me and points to the left side of his face. I give him a quick peck and tell him I'll see him tomorrow. Karaoke. I plan to involve alcohol. Lots of alcohol.
When people ask me what I want out of a relationship, I will tell the story I just told you. I dream of random acts of theatre, boastful games of pinball and a discussion about how the Simpsons hasn't been good since season 14.
