"Really, Eirik. You HAVE to start getting out more. meeting people. You can't keep to yourself in your house, crying over her forever, ya know"
This is the sort of advice I give over brunch to friends in the deepest, darkest parts of a breakup. I'm of the "shake it off" sort.
He hangs his head, knowing I'm right. He says he's sorry for flaking out on a promise to come to my gig Friday.
"Do you think you'd be up for volunteering for SxSW? You'll meet tons of people. And Wayne (aka, the boy I never shut up about lately) called me yesterday saying they really needed people this year. Open call is this afternoon"
"I'd really like that", Eirik replies.
I call wayne to find out time and location. I tell Eirik we need to be downtown around 3.
We finish our plate of fruit salad and tiny cakes. I go to Target. Why? Because I did not have a clean outfit that was good enough to mill around a hotel ballroom while my friend signed up for SxSW, just IN CASE, I ran into Wayne. So I got a new top and a cute new scarf for my hair so I could look good for the hour we would be there. I am offically what feminists hate.
We went to Eirik's house so he could fill out the online application for volunteers. I put on eyeliner. On a sunday. It's an illness.
We drove downtown. Beautiful day outside. Complete 180 from the icestorm we had just 6 days prior. We drove with the windows rolled down.
We go to the 6th floor of the hotel the open call is out. Eirik fills out the the paperwork while we are waiting to go in. I see wayne coming over out the of the corner of my eye.
"OH MY GOD, EIRIK! He's comin over!!"
And Eirik tells me what every girl wants to hear right at this point.
"Your tits look great. Don't worry"
So wayne comes over. I introduce him to my friend. He tells eirik to come over and talk to him and he'll set him up with some primo shifts for the confrence.
After watching a short film about volunteering, Eirik and I go in and find Wayne. It is immediately obvious that Wayne is going to totally bend the rules to make sure Eirik gets all the perks for minimal work.
After he gets eirik started looking at shift times and venues (he is making eirik a house manager for the film fest, which is unheard of for a first time volunteer), Wayne comes over and gives me a hug and tells me how long a day its been and how stressed he is. I tell him that we should go outside for a smoke.
We leave Eirik and walk outside to the 6th floor balcony.
He lights my cig with his.
After lots of chitchat, I realise that there are things a boy can do or say that mean more than a kiss. A sure sign that he is interested in keeping you around for awhile.
"You know, The Stooges are gonna be here this year. I should have an extra pass. I'd like to take you to see the Stooges with me."
That was better than any kiss could ever be.
