Birthday Rant:
I love my wife. She was sweet and happy this morning. I hope our evening leads to spooning which leads to forking.
I have a favorite birthday story that I like to tell. I was born on my father's 33rd birthday. When I became a kid, the birthday party would honor us both. My father, a beloved tormentor, would always remind me that all the gifts recieved would be shared by us both: He would get half interest in my toys and games, I would get half interest in his socks and underwear.
There's a Bettie Serveert song with a lyric about keeping your feet on the ground and head in/on (?) a cloud. While it rings a little Casey Kasem, I find it an apt metaphor for these days. I am at peace, but that does not mean that I am content with the state of affairs. We must be grounded in reality, but high-minded and open-minded in our search for a better society, and a better life for its individuals.
Here's one solution that should make the blood-thirsty happy. Let's abolish the death penalty in exchange for assisted euthanasia for those life-ers who would rather speed their own deaths than live an institutional existence. No more silly appeals!
