STRAWBERRY LETTER NUMBER 9:
Hello, My Dear:
The day a guy buries his dog seems like an awkward day to write a love letter. But it is not. As I was driving home, listening to Shuggie, thinking about my sad, stupid dog that I loved, and how love is such a painful, powerful thing sometimes, and yet, thank God for love, right? I mean the world would be nothing without love. It would be a rock with water and sick parasites. Which brings me to you, the greatest manifestation of love I will ever know.
I was thinking about words Id use to express my feelings at our wedding, and I thought of something like this:
We have the privilege and pleasure of knowing and loving every person here today, and your presence at this occasion is important to us. We know that you are the people who made us into who we are, and will be the people that will help us succeed in that very sacred contract called marriage.
What are you gonna live on? love? That was a question a beloved once asked. We know there is, in this marriage, a lifetime of lawyers arguing about money and day care and college and retirement and the dishes and laundry and dinner and sex. We know there will be suffering and tragedy and terrorism and cancer and death. But all I have to do is to reflect a moment on the sheer joy that this woman brings to me, get swept up in the memories of our lives together, so far, and look a little deeper into her eyes and I know, for a fact, that indeed, yes. We are going to live on love.
No more D.U.I.s, people. And dont support the death penalty. It is not Gods will to occasionally painfully execute the innocent in a racially and/or economically discriminatory manner. Or, maybe, its just us?
I suppose it needs some work, but you get the idea. Snoopy, Love, Sweet Pea, KellyKellyKelly Love. Im savin all my love for you, momma. You and my left hand.

Love, Shuggie
