Well, we finally have a new leader! And it looks like the better man won....for once. So why don't I feel a sudden sense of elation, as opposed to just a sense of relief? Good question. We do finally have a guy in office who at least gives a damn about our people as opposed to his own agenda and that is already good enough to begin with. Another 4 years, this time of Republican rule under McCain / Palin would've did us in. Still, I'm kinda anxious as to whether Obama truly can clean up the mess made under 8 years of BUll-SHit under Dubbya......or actually Cheyney and his band of cronies. I hope so, but if he at least tries no matter the outcome, I ain't gonna knock him for it. So on a national level, things look at least hopeful and that's a start.
However, on the other hand, I feel extremely confused and pretty pissed off. The big thing that has been bothering me since last night was the passing of Prop 8, here in California. For those who ain't familiar, is supposed to be a constitutional amendment which will eliminate the rights of homosexual couples to marry. And why? Conservative reasons are "To protect marriage" Protect it from what? No one's marriages were being threatened before this new law was proposed. It really turns a knife in my gut that on one hand, people everyday brag about us being a "free country", where everyone's rights are protected.....but at the same time, we're deciding to let the law step in and tell people how to run their personal lives? What? This is kind of double standards, I was so pissed off about the other day (see blog from the other day) that I see the US LOADED with almost on a daily basis!!
Yeah, people argue that the Bible says homosexuality is wrong. A few points I wanna make to respond to that:
1.) Whether you like it or not, not everyone follows the Bible! Not everone is or even fancies themselves as a Christian. If I'm not mistaken, Freedom of Religion IS covered in the First Amendment and from what I gathered that means WHATEVER RELIGION YOU CHOOSE!!!! NOT what our government or anyone else, for that matter says you have to follow. That's our choice as individuals.
2.) Even if the Bible says that homosexuality is wrong.....here's another news flash: Ready? The Bible is NOT the law of the United States!! The Constitution is our main law here. and under no circumstances does it say that any group is to be discriminated against!
And yet for the past 200 years, it's happened over and over again. People had to fight for years and years just to get basic human rights recognized because of their race, gender, and now sexual orientation? Strikes me funny because I was taught growing up that Christ taught us to love each other and now only by mouth, but also by actions! He walked among and associated with everybody, whether you were considered "chosen" or not! And yet, people, who claim to be Christain show their "love" by stomping on the rights of their fellow people? And the biggest irony of it all is that a lot of people who voted in the Prop 8 shit are the same people whose ancestors or who themselves fought for their own civil rigths and the civil rights of others many decades ago!!!! Doesn't sound like love to me. In fact, there's a word for that. It's called HYPOCRISY!!! And that kind of hypocrisy is one of the many reasons why I and people like me have decided to abandon religion.....at least organized religion. (There are many other reasons why I made that choice but many of them are personal and that's a topic for another day)
So once again, a group of people has been singled out and marginalized because of how they feel, and in a country where we brag about our freedom and democracy. Lemme tell you something about that right now. If you're gonna preach about our great nation, where like the Declaration of Independence says, "..all men are created equal" (and if you want to get technical, "and women" should've been included in that statement.) then practice what you fucking preach, and include everyone!! That especially goes for those self-righteous, conservative, old farts running this country!!! You don't have to agree with everyone's beliefs, lifestyles, whatever, so long as no one is doing harm to others, everyone's personal lives are just that....PERSONAL and not your fucking business unless they allow it!
To everyone and especially all my friends, whether you argee or disagree with my views, it's up to you and I ain't gonna knock you if you don't. But understand I've lived on the "right" and the "left" of this nation and I've been blessed to be exposed to cultures of all kinds, especially throughout my years in San Francisco. One thing those years have taught me is to never forget that everyone is different and we are no better or no worse than everyone else, as individuals, or groups. Maybe if everyone fully REALIZE that and bothered just for a while to put themselves in the shoes of others, I think we'd have more of a right to call ourselves a true nation of freedom, instead of a nation of lies and contradictions.
