This is my "Statement giving reasons for wishing to enter professional theatre." Please read it and tell me what you think. Comment, questions, suggestions for improvement. Thanks, guys.
Theatre drives me.
It is what I wish to spend my life doing. Throughout my recent life, I have striven to speak and work with as many people as I could find to learn about the opportunities available, the rewards, and the hard work involved in the many aspects of the theatre community. Every experience I have had, I have walked away from filled with a sense that I am doing the right thing in pursuing this career. Recently, I have spoken with many people in the BFA faculty, and walking away from those conversations has always left me with a feeling of passion I have not known before.
I started seriously considering drama at a young age, but had neither the tools, nor the determination at the time to seriously pursue it. Throughout junior high and high school, my focus was always participating in theatre. Drama was always the highlight of my day, and even participating on that level and no other was rewarding for me. I would come home with a script and pore over it to make sure I understood what was going on, and to properly memorize my lines. I would pester my teachers to no end in inquiring about my acting style to make sure I was doing it 'right.' Once in high school, I made sure to be involved in every play that went up, and started directing plays for the one-act festival that happens every spring here in Edmonton. I had successes, failures, and experienced growth every time I stepped on the stage, either in rehearsal or in performance. Throughout school, I would go to any performances circumstances would allow me to goto, and enjoyed attending Theatresports at the Varscona theatre, NextFest, and various plays throughout the city.
This first year here at the University of Alberta (for my bachelor of arts as a drama major) has been especially rewarding. I have never worked on so many pieces and learned so much in such a short time, and the idea of being able to go into a specialized program where there is potential in learning so many new things everyday with such a close-knit group
of people cuts my breath short and brings a smile to my face. The level of growth that I could harness in the BFA Acting program is beyond comprehension to me now, and I am anxious to experience and work through everything that it could hold for me, and to later apply all I have learned to a career in theatre.
I wish to enter professional theatre so that I can wake up every morning and know that I am doing something I love. To have successes, failures, good and bad times, and experience the growth of my character that can only come from working with art directly everyday. I wish to have the opportunity to express the joy, growth, pain, and suffering that exists in our world, and to try to convey that to an audience on a regular basis.
And my name in the paper would be nice for my mom to read.
I believe I have the talent and the willingness to dedicate myself completely to learning everything the BFA program and professional theatre can teach me. I carry a truly open spirit that allows me to work tremendously well in an ensemble, and I possess a burning curiosity and a rich imagination that would thrive in such an learning environment and later in a rewarding career.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Perry E. Gratton
