There's a paradigm of human nature that suggests you can't give anybody anything for free without them taking advantage of it.
My friend, Joel, who is a tattoo artist, and gets asked for free tattoos quite often, as all tattooists must, said he has completely stopped hooking up his friends, because not only do they take advantage of him, robbing him of money and time, but he sees they never actually care for the work with any reverance, like someone who pays the full price might.
trashe and I let a girl, who was really having a bad time of it, move in with us, for free, so she could have a little time to save money and find a nice place of her own.
I asked her not to do one thing, only one thing. I said nobody should be staying over, sleeping or otherwise, that she was our guest, but we were unwilling to put up with strangers in the house.
That was the only request.
Did she bring people over to stay?
Yep. She did it a few times, maybe more than I know. But, the last time, I was awoken at 3:30 am and I gave birth to one fat cow. I "screamed" at her, as she put it. Really, I yelled, but that's splitting hairs.
I told her the dude had to go.
This was last Saturday.
She's avoided us in every possible way, only using one-sided methods to even communicate, like writing us a feeble apology email (with numerous justifications and excuses) but never reponding to our responses. No call.
Never home before 1 in the morning, so as not to see us.
Mind you, she lives with us for Free. No rent, no bills, no nothing. I asked one thing.
This has been the case since September.
Now, today, she's making a mad, cowardly dash to move out--running scared is a good way to think about it.
So, tonight we're celebrating trashe's birthday with a few friends, a few days early to be able to see them, and this bitch has chosen to pick today to move out.
