It seems to me that Holst's 'Planets Suite' is an idealised depiction of the Edwardian English/Imperial upper-class man.

The progress of the Victorian/Edwardian male:


  • Mars - Soldiering

  • Venus - Wooing (Romantic Love, if you will)

  • Mercury - Children

  • Jupiter - Maturity (Being a mover and shaper)

  • Saturn - Middle age (Public Office)

  • Uranus - Grandchildren and Frailty

  • Neptune - Senility



I know, that's not the received wisdom. But look at it again: it works.

Edit: Aaand, I need a life. It's Friday night; I should be out on the town. Instead I'm playing the ivory tower academic.

I agree with you about Holst's 'Planets'.

However, I'm not sure if it's the ideals of the former age, as in a way, That is the reflection of the ideals of the current age.

That is something to consider, but it wasn't all that long ago that gas was up to $4 or higher. It isn't even 3 here, so I think I can give myself a treat. I didn't go to this particular event, but I am going to go soon.
