I love CBC radio. It always reminds me of my father. I spent a good part of my youth gluing things together in his woodworking shop listening to Peter Gzowski, or any one of the number of great voices speaking to the mysteries of life from the fuzzy speakers and thier battered old stereo.
"Vinyl Cafe" is on right now. Stuart Mclean is one of the ghreatest story tellers I've ever heard. He has a rythm and cadence that is simply mesmerizing. It reminds me a lot of Garrison Kiellor. (NPR was also a frequent visitor to the old mans radio dial)
I had a nice long conversation with my sister yesterday. She and her husband are spending the summer in his uncles cabin in the woods above Kaslo. They don't have a phone so she has to cycle into town to use the phone at her husbands work. They don't have electricity either. The water system is gravity fed from a glacial spring. The water-line runs through a wooden box that they use as a cooler. They have a wood stove and a propane cooker attached to a bottle under the cabin. You shower outside under a black bag shower that has to be brought in when you're done. (The bears associate black bags with garbage [ie. food]).
I've decided I'm going to take the entire month of September off and to Ontario. Slowly. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while. I have some things to get out of my dads attic. It would be nice to finally get my drum back. I put 70 hours of work into that thing and it's been sitting getting dusty for 5 years. It's load though. I won't be able to play it inside (chances are it'll shake the house down). I'm not sure whether I'll have company for the drive (If anyone's interested in sharing part or all of the journey let me know. )
I've been working on this balsa wood airplane model that belonged to my ex's brother. He was killed in a motorcycle accident during a sudden, freak Ontario snow storm in September 2003. He had just turned 19 tree days earlier. I helped her family move in April and her mother gave me the plane. They hadn't touched his room since he died. Packing it all up and giving it away mustn't have been easy.
Anyway I'm just starting to do something with it now.
That's it for now.
