A good first place to look for apartments is Craigslist. It will at least give you an idea of what prices are in different areas. I suggest you pick a couple of areas where you think you'd like to live and check out apartments there. Craigslist gets a lot of hits though, so it can be competitive. I got my first NYC apartment there, but that was 4 years ago and Craigslist was much smaller.
The next one I got was through the Village Voice. If you go to the Village Voice website there are real estate listings that you can sort by area, price, apartment size, etc. Not a bad resource.
The most recent apartment I got I found by going directly to a brokerage firm's website. The one I went to was Corcoran, one of the biggest listing agents in NYC. The downside is that you will almost certainly have to pay a brokerage fee when you get a place, and they're not cheap. Standard is between 12-18% of the total rent for the year.

I remember reading the Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy back in grade school. It would make me break out laughing in the middle of study hall... that pissed the teachers off something fierce.
If you liked Douglas Adams and William Gibson you'd probably like Neal Stephenson. Have you read any of his work?
