Active compassion is the means to positively assist this possible and probable problem.
Compassion for yourself, and therefore all, would not be supporting and consuming the products and production of alcohol and ciggarettes, etc. Apathy is not compassion. Ones pursuit of convenience is wholey destructive. Peace, true inner and outer peace is hard work. No, really hard work. That's why it is avoided more than the plague.
Of course nothing, nothing will give you more joy and satisfaction. There are many, many rewards along this narrow and often dark path. If you really think you're all the good things that you are, if you really think you're all the hardcore things that you are, etc...
