Nrisimha Avatar
This is heavily abridged from Steven J. Rosen's (The Legend of Bagger Vance) 'The Glory of India.'
Perhaps the most fantastic and extraordinary looking of Vishnu's avatars is Nrisimha (Half man, half lion).
Thousand of yrs ago when people lived for inordinate periods, a powerful tyrant king named Hiranyakashipu desired immortality. So, you see this greed and power thing is nothing new. He performed severe penance for 36000 yrs hoping the demi gods would grant him immortality.
Lord Brahma appeared informing him even he does not live eternally, albeit he live for trillions of yrs. And so it's possible to grant this wish.
Thinking himself most cunning the dastardly king requested "If I cannot become immortal, then please grant me that I not be killed by any weapon known by man, nor may I be killed indoors nor outdoors, nor in the daytime or nighttime". This secured with Brahma, Hiranyakshipu felt he'd tricked Brahma and acheived immortality.
Hiranyakshipu had a most pious son, Prahlad whom loved Vishnu and this infuriated the soddly king, cheif amonst atheists. (How he made a deal with a demi-god bewilds me, but apparently this is ffrom the vedas so...) Hiranyakshipu arranged for his son death on several occassion but divine intervention saved the little blighter. So he figured if you want a job done right, do it yerself.
Before doing so he asked Prahlad "How were you able to avoid my murderous plots? What is the source of your power?. Prahlad responded that everything occurs through the will of the Lord, and that the source of his strengthis actually the source of all strength - God.
Well, by golly, gee wizz, I'm sure you can imagine the 36000 yr penance doing dude was a trifle ticked off at what ought to be his most devoted lacky. (can you tell the parts I put in) He demanded to see this "God" Prahlad let him know he is all pervading. (Surely he'd heard that before ) "Then why is he not in this pillar?! " Upon striking the pillar with his fist, Hiranyakshipu was shocked to see the pillar explode, revealing the immensely powerful form of Nrisimhadeva, the divine Man-Lion.
Lord Nrisimha tolerated Hiranyakshipu's vain attempts of violence. But then He lifted the soddenly sodonto His lapand, ripping opemn his abdomen, disemboweled the arrogant ruler. Yay. .Lord Nrisimha aved the planet from the tyrant ruler whilst honoringBrahmas benedictions. He was killed not by man or beast but by the Lord Himself-half man, half beast. He was killed not on land or sky but on the Lords lap. He was killed not in or outdoors, but in the doorway to an assembly hall. He was killed not at day or night but at twilight. He was not killed by any weapon but with the Lords transcendental nails.
All a little dubious but so is Bush's re-election and ya can't deny that either.
