But Margaret Clitherow's death may have had a yet greater effect on Bristish history. Her terrible end certainly caused a sensation at the time. Whilst Catholics Feted her, many in the city could not believe how willingly she had gone to her death. Her father, Henry May, Lord Mayor of York, actually accused her of effectively commiting suicide and abandoning her family. But there was one young and impressionable man in York who was very impressed with Margaret's faith. A new convert to Catholicism, he was probably present at the execution. His name was Guy Fawkes.
