Hmmm... interesing concept... I've often wondered that myself.... cultures from back in the day and stuff weren't monogmous, so why are we now?
I'm not so sure tho that I may be leading a person on if you do love them, but are not IN love with them... but I do beleive that if you take it day by day (like you said) it could lead to deeper love.
