I work in a very strange and sometimes wonderful business. I know it drives me insane sometimes, but I dont know what else Id do, just like everyone else I know here. The TV and Film business in NY, believe it or not, is a very small, tightly-knit community when everyone knows everyone else. Or at the very least, knows someone who knows someone. You get the idea. Its an alliance of freaks, outcasts, misfits, union guys, wayward accountants, aging hipsters, ex-hippies and all sorts of interesting people. The stories are told at night, when the world is asleep, or at 4 in the morning in the freezing cold trying to get a shot that seems to never go right. People living on the edge of the world. Sometimes the hours are so strange that you dont know what day it is, or what the rest of the world is up to. People working 9-5 seem like aliens. Its endlessly fascinating to me.
But if you have any doubt that our business is unlike others, call 212/714.8045. It's Radioman's hotline about what's going on in the NY film and TV world.
Radioman is hard to describe. Hes sort of a legendary character in NY. Robin Williams character in "The Fisher King" is based on him. (Mr. Williams, by the way, did a GREAT Radioman). Everyone knows Radioman, but nobody really knows his story, but something is clearly wrong with him mentally. He talks to himself and curses constantly without provocation. He doesnt bathe for months on end and he looks and smells like it. He wears a large radio strapped around his neck (hence his name) and wears filthy old clothes and rides a bicycle from one set to another all day. He might be hanging out on The Sopranos set in the morning, then hell ride over to Law and Order and then to whatever feature is shooting in the city. Hes sort of like a good luck charm and the unofficial mayor of the film underworld. Its a freelance business and jobs are got on hearsay and connections, and all production assistants go to Radioman for the news on whats coming to town. We hear Bruce Willis has a movie coming here Radioman, whats the story? How about the Ben Stiller job, are they just doing exteriors here or is it the whole movie? Hes been worked into countless movies and TV shows. I cant even begin to count how many times Ive seen him used as an extra, usually playing a homeless person or. Everyone thinks he's homeless, because he LOOKS homeless, but he's not. Why do I know this? Because he was Whoopi Goldberg's date to the Oscars last year (I'm not kidding) and Jim Gandolfini paid for the limo to take him to the airport. I had to get Radiomans address to have him picked up. (Jim only agreed to do so if Radioman promised to shower before going, by the way.)
And now he has his own hotline. And by the way, I got this hotline number from Annabella Sciorra when she was on Sopranos, who says she calls Radioman all the time.
Like I said, this is a very strange business.

(It's a problem, I really have to keep pushing Sg from my mind when I am doing my meditation. I think up stuff I'll write in my journal, but it's useless anyway 'cos I've forgotten it all by the time Im back here. I feel quite lucky with my meditation practice - I find it fairly easy to bring my mind gently back to the moment. It wanders as minds will, but I can bring it back. I am just so lucky to have that ability.)
HOW ARE YOU TODAY YOUNG MAN? AND WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO LONDON, HUH?
