Sorry. Things have been a bit crazy.
BUT- while I'm waiting for some time to do a proper blog I wanna tell you a story about my friend Annelise.
Annelise had a job interview last week. I need to tell you a bit about her before I tell you about that, though.
Annelise moved here from California with her boyfriend about a year ago. In LA, Annelise produced a feature movie. She produced a bunch of music videos and shorts. She was 25.She's a smart cookie. Obviously.
But since then her luck has sort of turned around. She got a job with a producer out here who put her into the hospital with anxiety with his insane sexual harassment and psychotic stalking. Then she and her boyfriend broke up. She had to leave her apt and all that. She moved into a new place and was kicked out due to bedbugs. Got a job as the Producer's asst on "Nurse Jackie" (where I met her), where she was used as a glorified dog walker. She applied for a dream job and was told that she was overqualified.
Oh, and her mom calls often enough to tell her that she's a loser because she doesn't have a full time job with benefits. But Annelise wants to write and produce things. She's funny, brilliant and talented. She also does stand up at various open mic nights around the city and she's hilarious. I've seen her several times. This is someone who owes it to herself to see what she's got. What she can write. What she can produce. Having a full time job would most likely drain that energy (let's be honest, it totally would). She's kinda better off in Production where she can work on a tv show for a few months and then do her own thing and try to produce some web series or write something and try to get that made. Working 9-5 (or 8-7, which is more likely in NYC) just kinda steals that from you.
She's recently been contacted about the website The Gloss about possibly writing content for them. She was contacted by another site about possibly doing funny videos for them. And I'm trying to get my friend Ashley to try to get some money from The Onion (whom she works with) to get Annelise some money to do some stuff for THEM. So things are brewing. But nothing has happened yet.
so she gets this call last week to be Noah Baumbach's assistants. Noah Baumach is an accomplished film writer and director who is famous for hiring pretty girls and treating them in a creepy way. Two of my friends have interviewed with him and turned down the job because they got an icky feeling ).
BUT- here is the key- Noah has apparently signed a multi picture deal with Dreamworks. So Annelise would be his permanent asst (most directors just hire someone for the length of the project they are on at the time, as the project pays them. Not the director). AND she would get benefits. So it sounded great. Kinda. Mostly great. But it was a compromise between some corporate job and a job with a creative person in a creative field. Even if he was a bit icky.
So she sent herself a text (with what I assumed was the address of her meeting place) and went out to meet him. Spring in her step. She came back over an hour later looking dejected. When I asked what happened she said that Noah was looking for someone who would be "fulfilled" by being his personal assistant- making his reservations, keeping his books in order, ordering his lunch. Etc.
Annelise said "well I do want to write and produce my own things. I just want to be honest. I know full well that this job would take precedence"
And he said "I really need you to decide what you want to do. You have to ask yourself if you want a job or you want to do shit for free"
So she came back. Looked at her phone again, and called him up to decline the job. And the health benefits. And the steady paycheck.
I didn't know what to ask so I said "Where did you meet him?"
And she said "Oddly, just around the corner."
And I said "Oh! funny. You texted yourself the address to go around the corner"
and she said "No. I didn't."
I asked her what she texted to herself. She showed me her phone. It said:
"Bet on you"
Fucking love that!!!
"Bet on you"!!!
Hope all you guys are well.
