Ok, who out there wants to kill themselves? Raise your hand.
Let's see...one...two, three, four, five...we have a bunch a you this year.
Ok, let's try to figure this out, shall we? It's not hard to see why people hate this time of year. I mean, the holidays are super stressful. Roads are more crowded, stores are insane. The economy is in the shitter. Your bills are enough to give you a stroke and NOW you're expected to buy gifts for everyone you know. And show up at parties, and eat and drink to excess. Etc, etc, etc.
But more than that it's just the idea that during the holidays society tells you that you should be happy and thankful. That this is a time for family and close friends. But there are plenty of people who feel anything BUT happy and thankful this time of year. And, as everyone knows, some families are horrible. And some people don't have a lot of friends around.
Well guess what? EVERYBODY is depressed. That's reality. Some people are better actors and some people are better at denial than others. There are a FEW people who have a great family AND money, and they get to smile. Everyone else who is happy this time of year is an idiot. life sucks. Everyone knows that.
So what do you do? Kill yourself? Nah, too dramatic. And too much trouble. And that's admitting defeat. The way I see it, you acknowledge what a pain in the ass this season can be and you focus on stuff you like. Cause no matter what your situation is there is stuff to be thankful for, like- The Beatles. Like Picasso. Like John Stewart. Like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and the best show on the planet Earth. Like the Ramones. Like books, and art and Mozart. Like that one relative who you DO kinda like. Like that one friend who you usually can depend on. Like dogs and kids (but not their parents) and elephants and sex and love and chocolate and wine, and, well....Christmas.
Christmas is cool. Well, it's not all bad. The lights are pretty. I'm not gonna get into weather Jesus was the son of god or any of that. Christmas was around for a long time before Jesus anyway. It just went by other names. It's a time to celebrate what we have, yes, but it's also a time for a new start. It comes at the end of the year for a reason. It's a time to let the bad stuff go. And, maybe, just maybe, for just a second, you can actually catch somebody being actually sorta nice to someone at this time of year. For a minute. We're not here all that long. And, despite everything, sometimes you just have to set it all aside and have fun.
Happy holidays.
