Ok so this is my weekend story for you:
Just a little background first. I was going South Bristol Maine. I was leaving work at 7PM on Friday for the 7 hour drive so I'd be getting there around 2AM. My friend Sarah has a family house there. I had never been there.
There was a whole group going up, but they left Friday morning. they were gonna go camping on Friday night on an island not too far off the coast by her house. I was gonna go to the house, let myself in and stay over there and meet them all the next morning. I was worried about finding the key they were leaving for me.
Well they DID leave a key, but I couldn't find the house. It was in the woods, pitch black with no lights. it was 2AM. I didn't have an address but they sent me a picture of the house and a general description where in the woods the house was. Not entirely helpful. Once you left the main road (and that, believe me, was a relative term) there was a small, badly paved road through the woods. It was barely big enough for one car and you couldn't see ANYTHING more than a foot away but little dirt driveways lead off of this "road" to the houses there. So I was driving up and down those driveways looking at the houses and comparing them to the picture that I had. Also, I didn't get phone reception. ALSO I didn't realize that the last gas station that I passed 30 minutes ago was the last one I'd see that was open ANYWHERE close to where I was. And now I was almost entirely out of gas and my "get gas" light had been flashing for about a half hour. And on top of that (and this is gonna make me sound like a sissy, but it's the truth) I had either eaten something really bad or I got way more car sick than I ever have been in my life (and I haven't gotten car sick since I was 4) but I kept having to get out of the car to throw up. Good stuff.
So I was in the woods driving in and out of people's driveways in the woods looking at houses with no phone reception and almost no gas while throwing up. At 2AM. I think my options were to run out of gas in the woods or get shot by someone for trespassing. I decided that neither option was desirable. I remembered seeing a bed and breakfast about 10 miles back on the main road so I decided to try to make it to that.
I got there and the light in front was on and a sign saying "Come on in!". So I did. it was all dark inside except for a small night light over the front desk. A sign on the bell said "Ring me and someone will be right with you". So I did. And nobody was right with me. Rang again. I called out. Nothing. So I went upstairs to see if I could find anyone. All the lights were off but all the rooms were open. So I went back down, wrote a note saying "My name is Chris Collins. I had no gas and I'm lost. I tried ringing a few times and nobody answered. Here is my credit card. I'm in room #2. I'll be up by 10AM".
And I went to room #2. I took a quick shower (because of all the puking), brushed my teeth and went to bed.
And the phone rings.
I hadn't had reception all night. I didn't even think to turn it off. It was my friend Sarah- whose family owns the house I was trying to find.
"Hey! just checking on you! Where are you?"
"I'm at a bed and breakfast. I couldn't find the house"
"Where were you?"
"I was where you told me in the woods. I had the picture of the house. I was looking for it. I couldn't find it"
"OH! I forgot to tell you! You can't see the house from the road!"
"No kidding! It's pitch dark!"
"No, I don't even mean that. You can only see the garage from there. It's a big brown barn. Behind that you have a set of steps that leads down to the house."
"Oh...I think I saw that barn"
"Go! Please the house! It's waiting for you! Don't stay at a bed and breakfast!"
"Ummm...ok"
So I grabbed my stuff, took back my note and credit card and snuck out of the bed and breakfast. So they woke up the next morning to an unmade bed, used towels and drawn shades. It would have looked to them like someone broke in to take a nap.
I would have LOVED to have been there when they saw that.
And, for the record, I did find the house and the rest of the the weekend was amazing. Boats, lobster, clam bakes (!!!), good stuff.
How was everyone's weekend?
