When I was a kid I'd spend my summers at my grandmother's house in Budd Lake, NJ. The days were long. I spent my time with my sister, my cousin, and the kids on the street. We had nothing to do but watch the clouds roll by. We'd hike in the woods. We'd spend the days at the lake, hanging out on the shore, trying to catch fish, going for a swim. We'd go home when it got dark and caught fireflies at night.
Life is simple when you're a kid. Everyone you know is around you. Everyone you know is alive. If you're lucky you have at least one parent that loves you and makes you feel safe. The world is a predicable place on one hand, and is full of adventure on the other. Life is full of possibilities, mystery and fun.
Then you get older. The possibilities are suddenly limited. People you love let you down. People die. Life becomes full of unbearable sadness sometimes. The world becomes harsh and cold and unforgiving. Such is the price of aging. Such is the price of adulthood. Such is the price of freedom.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
The passage of time, to me, is a blessing rather than a curse. Time has given me the gift of fucking things up enough to pass off something approaching wisdom. Time has given me the ability to accept and own my own actions. Time has given me everything I've loved in my life. If it's taken away what it needs to take, so be it.
Happy new year everyone.
Hope you all have an amazing 2009.
