Hilllary
You just have to say that one word and you unleash all the passion of a generation's struggles.
Half the country hates her beyond reason. And hates her with a PASSION. People don't hate smallpox the way they hate Hillary. And asked why, most of them have the same answer "I just don't like her."
huh
I'm not talking about right wing Limbaugh listeners here, by the way. They think all Clintons have horns and a tail. I'm talking about otherwise reasonable, somewhat ill-informed, middle of the road voters.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons not to like Hillary Clinton. She's a politician. Most politicians are essentially compromised people. Especially the overtly ambitious ones, as she most certainly is. But the reasons for disliking Hillary are pretty similar to the reasons you would dislike Bill: the fact that they triangulate positions until they stand for essentially nothing, the fact that they welcomed corporate interests into the Democratic Party like they were inviting the prettiest girl at school to the party, and the fact that they essentially helped turn the Democratic party into Republican lite.
But if you ask most of these people who "just don't like" Hillary about her husband they all say "I love Bill". Yet Bill and Hillary essentially stand for the same thing. In fact out of the two of them you could easily make the case that SHE is the principled one. She was the one who tried pushing through comprehensive health care. She failed. But who else has tried that in our history?
And of course inevitably we get to Monica. For reasons I can't quite figure out Hillary has somehow become the person we're all mad at in the Monica Lewinsky debacle. I hear this again and again. "I just couldn't stay with a man who did that to me." But if I ask these SAME people about Bill Clinton in a separate conversation they glow about his charisma and talk longingly about 8 years of peace and prosperity. Somehow he strayed and she payed. She became the dumping ground for our feelings about the whole Monica mess. I'm still trying to figure that out.
Hillary is not only the first woman to run for president. She's also carrying our nations baggage with her. She's constantly described as a "bitch". What evidence is that backed up with? In other circles, of course, she's a lesbian or a she-male. Or in some she's Lady Macbeth, who obviously had Vince Foster killed for reasons I don't quite understand. There's that old joke that Hillary can't wear short skirts because her balls will hang too low.
Imagine the fear of women that this reveals!! No other figure in the country is the subject of such passions. Yes, Hillary is a compromised politician. But there are FAR worse people on the national stage who don't arouse anywhere near the moral indignation that she does. Why is that?
I keep hearing again and again the insane question "Is America ready for a women president?"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of England 20 years ago! Benazir Bhutto was Prime Minister TWICE in PAKISTAN!!! And we-the "land of the free and home of the brave" are still asking if women can run things? Like the men have done such an amazing job!?
I don't know where this race is going, and honestly Hillary is NOT my candidate. If she's the nominee, however, I will be happy to have her as a president. But her run is showing us that we have a long, long way to go.

I also want to say, regarding Hillary, I don't think she should be a serious candidate for the same reason I think George W. shouldn't have been. Fuck voting families in. We've had enough Bush, and enough Clinton. Let's try another last name for grins.
