If you haven't heard Wilson Pickett sing, then you need to immediately. Go download "Mustang Sally" or "In The Midnight Hour" or "Land of 1000 Dances". He was a true believer and one of the most amazing voices in recorded music. He died last night of a heart attack at his home in Virginia.
I remember being 13 years old or so and buying his "Greatest Hits" on the Atlantic label and listening to "I"m In Love" for the first time. There's a quality of ecstasy in that voice that makes you believe in not only love, but in God-as if he's channeling something that he doesn't fully understand. The word "great" is overused, but Wilson Pickett was truely great. he'll be missed.
In other news, Air America has finally given the great Rachel Maddow a decent time slot. She's on mornings from 7-9 in NYC and can be heard live on www.airamericaradio.com. She's funny, whip smart, a Rhodes Scholar, and gay. Her show is as good as she is. It's worth checking out.
