25 years ago John Lennon was returning home from an Annie Leibowtiz photo shoot. As he passed through the gate of the Dakota building at 1 West 72nd Street a figure emerged from the shadows. He called out "Mr. Lennon" and fired several shots into his back.
With that a man who was certainly one of the most important artists of the 20th century was dead.
The Beatles were my first favorite band. They're more than a band, they're nothing less than a massive cultural force, a leading light in a very dark century, and they're STILL way ahead of us. As a solo artist John Lennon produced the remarkable "Plastic Ono Band" album that still sounds more hardcore than most punk bands, and left an enduring legacy of unrelenting (and often ugly) honesty. And as a man he was fucked up, insecure, headstrong and brilliant.
We could use him today. The wrong two Beatles left us first.
