...the top 5 records of 2004!
5. Jackpot - F+
Anybody who thinks Cake is the best band in Sacramento has obviously never heard Rusty Miller and the Jackpot boys. A good deal better than their '02 record Shiny Things and a whole hell of a lot better than just about anything released by anybody in 2004. Download "Upside Down."
4. The Arcade Fire - Funeral
I do hate it when Pitchfork is right, but there's no denying that this full on orchestral bear hug deserves to be listed as one of the -- if not the -- best records of the year. Testament to their instant popularity is, after playing a sold out show at Bottom of the Hill in December, these Canadians booked and promptly sold out not one, not two, but three straight shows at Great American Music Hall. Don't download anything. Buy the whole fucking record.
3. A.C. Newman - Slow Wonder
More Canadians! I've never been big on The New Pornographers, but this solo record from frontman Carl Newman is fantastic. Power pop done right (without needless wailing from Neko Case) starts with "Miracle Drug" and "On the Table".
2. The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives
My personal number one of the year. 12 tracks of blistering, euro-fun garage punk clocking in at under 30 minutes. Brilliant. Toss in the greatest live show on the planet, and you can see in an instant why "America, you love the Hives." Download "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones" and "Walk Idiot Walk".
1. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Don't hate them because they're popular. Love them because they make you shake your ass.
And that's it! A year's worth of arguing, scheming, name-calling, and unabashed Miramax-style campaigning resulting in the only list worth mentioning!
And a special thanks to all my SG buddies who responded to the "You've Gotta Be An Asshole Not To Like..." column request. Your compilation CDs are in the mail. We never realized we were such tremendous assholes!
Well, that's not entirely true. I, for one, know I'm a major asshole.

Hello there fella. I for one am doing pretty darn well, thanks for asking. How about you? Compilation CD? What do you have to do to be one of the lucky recipients of that. Oooooo fun. I love music.
