Well, the new version of SG looks basically good. Biggest change I've seen to the place since I've been here. How have you been liking it so far?

Thanks for the link to Neil Gaiman's pep talk. I actually read American Gods recently. Thank you.

This year has been intense for reality surpassing the science fiction of the 90's. The latest prototype:

A handheld 5-kilowatt laser, usable like a welder's cutting torch.

It's not a proper laser rifle, so that's awesome. For once, the non-military applications lead. (Nope. See comment #1.)

Nice pun. But I did masonry. smile Most of the cutting I did was actually by hand with a Partner saw. I remember cutting some expensive cap stones once and my cut was slightly off. Got my ass chewed. Another time I set my pants on fire cutting rebar. Hmm, my leg sure is getting warm. Oh shit. I was a young lad.

You are probably right. In that case, let us say that it has bloomed into a rich, mature madness, and that it surprises even though it has been there all along.

What companies are doing stuff that excites you?

It's time for a new job The hardware startup I've been with has unfortunately gone the way of most startups.

I've gotten spoiled by working for companies that were doing awesome stuff. Really, there's no other way to work. How else to do good work than to want to do it and want to keep at it...

I know absolutely nothing about any of the companies, so I'll just advise you to go with the one that has cheesecake for lunch and a room full of puppies and kittens to cuddle during the break.

It's not a horror movie if there's no lesbian make-out. Arnie is optional, though.
tarion:
Why thank you. I must admit changing it regularly is pretty fun wink

Yes, you are right. When they aren't exploring the inner secrets of mason jars, they're plotting our tentacled doom. And thanks for the bday wishes!

Hope your travels went well. I read your Shenzhen blog, and I'm glad you got in some tourist time. Sometimes work trips seem to be about... well work, oddly enough. smile

Have fun.

That is great news for the Chinese. Really. And I hope that where China goes, goes the world.

SD dates are 10/20-10/23. Extracurricular dates TBD. Was thinking of taking the weekend before, but it would also be convenient to run a 15K that weekend if subsequent weekdays are more valuable for travel. Either way.

I have some Spanish - actually an embarrassingly great amount of Spanish, which I have tended poorly - but it is quite academic. I think it would be enough, given the proximity to the border - surely more would be better. Business Spanish? Not so much. I could work on it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mandarin was useful.

We, on the other hand, have had our second rainiest June ever. This is not what I signed up for when I chose this state.

(July's been a ton better. Not too hot, either. Thanks, weather gods!)

Heads up: I just cleaned out a dozen or so folks from my friends-list here. Because I actually DO use my list to keep up with people's blogs, and these were people who I pretty much never interact with on the site, outside of maybe a handful of comments years ago. I'm not guessing anyone I cut is going to notice.

If you're seeing this,...

I never bothered to clean up my list, aside from removing jerk wads that somehow made it through. The worst part? I don't really use the site enough to care anymore. I barely post at all. I still read the blogs of people I know, but almost never leave a comment. Glad that hasn't adversely affected our friend status here.

Never feel them to be mandatory, just feel the need for them to be clever!!

Today, while rushing-about-no-time-to-spare, I have consumed:

  • Two mugs of coffee.
  • One healthy meal.
  • Popcorn
  • A slice of chocolate cake.

Including in the day one workout, packing for travel, and last minute work/hacking/making.

Conclusion:
Chocolate and coffee are awesome.
Also:
I'm really, really, for real, not allergic to coffee or chocolate anymore. In fact, I feel great.

Now, to continue the healthy trend by having a...
